Kids Halloween Candy Code →
livejamie:
“Growing up in the Bowling Green neighborhood of Sacramento, I was taught how to read and mark houses with the Halloween Candy Code. For kids with an early curfew these codes were invaluable. Once we tagged a house, our peers could use our marks to reap the best full-size chocolate bars while avoiding Chex mix and dried apricots.”
Awesome. I guess this is what the geeky kids do...
Why I really should stay away from .NET structs →
This is the second or third time I’ve done this to myself. I’ll try to fill a struct using reflection, and can’t figure out why it doesn’t work. This is a great write-up why this happens.
God bless you, Internet
The missus and I went to a mind-meltingly good Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds acoustic set last night. It ended at around 10:00, give or take half an hour.
By the time I woke up this morning—at 6:30—there were two copies of the concert available for download.
God how I love the Internet.

In search of a wireless router that doesn't suck →
marco:
Help.
A few ideas:
First off, as a Verizon FiOS user, I can tell you that they will provide you a router if/when you get service from them. If you already have service and weren’t forced to use an Actiontek router, then clearly service in NYC is not the same as service in Virginia. On a related note, I’ve been more pleased with the Actiontek router than my Linksys or...
Laptop dilemma →
marco:
Even though I have fast desktops at home and work, I use a laptop almost every day on the train to browse the web, develop for the iPhone, and program web apps. I currently use a first-generation base-model MacBook Air, and I love its extremely light weight. But I’m really pushing the limits of its hardware, and I could really use a bigger screen.
I vote to keep your Air, with the...

The missus and I saw Elton John in concert, and have procured free tickets to see Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds next week. It’s been a good day.
Rock Band 2 for Wii won't stink! →
I’ve been dying to buy Rock Band for the Wii (our only console) since I played it on my parents’ PS3. However, Rock Band 1 was completely and utterly crippled, to the point of being not worth buying.
The good news, however, is that Rock Band 2 appears to be crippled in only the most minor of ways! Looks like I know what I’m going to want for the holidays!

Signaling the end? →
But the play we saw today was the prologue of the new Apple Without Steve but With Steve Era, Jobs signaling that he’s not alone at the helm, and that if he moves on, nobody should panic. Not explicitly, but the message was there in big neon letters for everyone to see.
I was thinking this whilst watching the live coverage. Of course, now I sound lame because I’m pulling the...
Spastic Apple Education Discounts?
When I priced my now prior-gen MacBook, using my wife’s K12 teacher discount, I found every one of them was $100 cheaper when using her discount.
With the new models, the education discount by model:

2.1GHz Old MacBook: $50
2.4GHz New MacBook: $100
2.4GHz New MacBook Pro: $100
2.53GHz New MacBook Pro: $200
2.5GHz Old MacBook Pro: $200
1.6GHz MacBook Air:...
Extremely Unlikely Love Story →
He was a teenager in a death camp in Nazi-controlled Germany. She was a bit younger, living free in the village, her family posing as Christians.
Their eyes met through a barbed-wire fence and she wondered what she could do for this handsome young man.
She was carrying apples, and decided to throw one over the fence. He caught it and ran away toward the barracks. And so it began.
Really...

Boy feeds Aussie zoo's animals to croc →
The [7-year-old] child then went on a killing spree, bashing three lizards to death with a rock, including the zoo’s beloved, 20-year-old goanna, which he then fed to “Terry,” an 11-foot, 440-pound saltwater crocodile…
Apparently this was largely caught on security cameras as well.

On Flexibility
My old employer (a Fortune 100 company) issued all their developers desktops. While I was there, I was lucky to come upon a HP laptop by being in the right place at the right time. However, to get it was a fiasco, and moreover, to get VPN access was a second fiasco. Furthermore, to add insult to injury, their only allowed/supported browser was Internet Explorer. 6.0. Wow.
My new employer (a...
