I was attempting to encode a DVD so the missus could watch it on the MacBook while we’re in the car today, without bothering with the DVD itself. I had about 2 hours to do it, before we left. The first pass took about an hour. It wasn’t until the second pass that Handbrake told me it needed another 2 3/4 hours for the second pass. pwn3d. Cue Marco reminding me his Mac Pro and...

Top 14 Top Gear Moments →
Top Gear is far and away my favo(u)rite TV show. This link features 14 classic snippets of it. These clips don’t entirely do the show justice, as they’re just snippets. Furthermore, Top Gear is one of the prettiest shows on TV—it really is filmed beautifully. YouTube doesn’t exactly lend itself to great picture quality, unfortunately. If you fancy cars, or just want to...

Warming
yourdp: Currently consuming my first cup of hot chocolate of the fall/winter season.  It warms the heart, the soul and most importantly my near frostbitten extremities due to keeping my thermostat below 67 degrees because winter gas bills blow. Oh how I love the holiday season. Glad the missus and I aren’t the only ones avoiding gas bills by way of freezing ourselves half to death. ...

On Obama's Pending NASA Decisions
I think Obama will give NASA the $2 billion. It’s a stimulus to the economy, something it badly needs. Now, I know that 90% of slashdot is libertarian, but Keynesian economics says that you do deficit spending in a recession. You both decrease taxes and increase spending, since the gov’t can act as a employer of last resort (when everyone else is firing). There’s no question that...

App for server maps?
marco: I need to keep a better version of our server/infrastructure diagram (showing their logical arrangements, IPs, roles, etc.). I’m outgrowing graph paper and could really use an electronic version, either web-based (ideal) or with desktop software (OS X). What do people use for this? My answer didn’t seem to get posted either, but Visio is the “professional” answer. ...

Virginia Tech even better value for money →
The Kiplinger “100: Best Values in Public Colleges” list, released earlier this month for its December issue, ranks Virginia Tech 15th [previously 18th] among 100 institutions “that combine outstanding economic value with a first-class education,” according to the publication’s editors. Glad to know the alma mater is ranked so highly. Of course, the missus’...

Just bought this via Amazon’s mp3 download service. Only marginally less user friendly than iTunes, in favor of fully unencrypted 256 kbps mp3s. Plus, when it downloaded them using their downloader, it added the new tracks to my iTunes library. No wonder everyone is carrying on about how awesome Amazon’s mp3 download service is.
