A Sporting Gesture Touches ’Em All →
hilker:
“The moment of grace came after Sara Tucholsky, a diminutive senior for Western Oregon, hit what looked like a three-run homer against Central Washington. Never in her 21 years had Tucholsky propelled a ball over a fence, so she did not have her home run trot in order, gazing in awe, missing first base. When she turned back to touch the bag, her right knee buckled, and she went down,...
Sorry, your SUV is now worthless →
This makes me smile inside, in a schadenfreude sort of way. I’ve never understood Americans’ obsession with SUVs, although admittedly I’m not a home owner nor father.

Well, that's odd.
In researching options for my latest pipe-dream, I noticed something peculiar. My wife’s education discount on a new MacBook is $100. However, her “discount” for a refurbished MacBook? An identical price tag, and two day slower shipping (1-3 days vs. 3-5 days).

Excited for Verizon FIOS
Reasons why I’m going to love Verizon Fios:
15 Megabits per second download speeds 15 megabits per second upload speeds Unlimited Newsgroup downloads Over 20 high definition channels Around 200 standard definition channels BBC America for Top Gear, even though it’s lamer than the native BBC version. Unlimited local & long distance
But the real kicker is, I’m getting...

hilker:
the article brings up three main points:
Problem 1: Men’s earnings Problem 2 and Good Development 1: Women’s increased presence in the paid labor market Problem 3: Faster price growth for some important stuff
not being an economist, these all make sense. but from a social perspective, i think the biggest cause is that we’ve learned to live beyond our means, or failed to act our...

A Friend's Thoughts on Verizon FIOS
Me: Not only will I be getting 15 megabits per second downloads AND uploads, but I will have no cap on newsgroup downloads.

Ubuntu "Hardy Heron" is Out →
If you’ve ever wanted to try Linux, do it now. I’ve been running Ubuntu exclusively at home for a while now. It’s surprisingly mature and easy to use. Moreover, once you burn a CD, you can run it without actually installing anything on your hard drive to try it out.

Any problem in computer science can be solved with another layer of indirection.
– David Wheeler. A very old quote, but one I try to remind myself of regularly, so I don’t make that mistake.

Call for help: What's a good "starter" Mac?
I’m can feel myself start to buckle under all the peer pressure. I’m strongly considering buying my first Mac.
For all you fanboys, self-proclaimed and closet alike, what do you recommend? While I probably could blow $2k+ on a MacBook Pro, I don’t want to. I’d like to do something nice, but on the cheaper side. I’m considering the $1300 MacBook that has the DVD...

– The End of Non-Widescreen Laptops? (on /.)
I’ve never understood the obsession with widescreens. I have a widescreen work laptop and a non-wide personal laptop. I prefer my personal one (which, ironically, is the predecessor to the T61 mentioned in the article).
Why OSX software doesn't suck →
A very interesting article (supposedly the first in a series) about a Windows developer coming to terms with why Macs don’t suck. As a Windows developer myself, this is of serious interest to me. Many of the things he noted were noted before.

Synergy - A Software KVM →
Synergy allows you to control multiple independent computers with one keyboard and mouse. This is for those who have multiple computers, each with their own displays, but don’t wish to purchase a KVM in order to control them all. Synergy is a software KVM that works with Windows, Linux, and OSX. Very neat stuff.
I’m currently using it to control both my work and personal laptops. ...

Everyone at my office has one of these… I felt left out. My wife spotted this before I did (thanks to me showing her the glory that is the RSS feed), so now I have one. $7!!!

Geolocation using WiFi →
Granted I’ve only tried it at two locations, but Loki (powered by Skyhook Wireless) does an eerily good job of locating you geographically based only on what wireless access point you’re connected to. This is the same technology that the iPhone and iTouch use instead of a GPS.
What I find really comical is that apparently they’ve amassed all this data by way of Wardriving.
The Benefits of a TV with an ATSC Tuner
Since our TV has an ATSC tuner, and it’s plugged directly into the wall (not via a cable box) we can get HD channels without paying any sort of ridiculous charges from our awful cable company.
Today I had the TV re-run the autotune to see what channels are available, and the amount of HD channels we get jumped from 5 to about 20. Brilliant!
On a related note, my wife and I are relocating...

Incredible uses of the Wiimote by Johnny Lee. The first videos of these tricks came out quite a while ago, but this is a new, concise video. For the geeks, the software he uses to run these demos is available, and is written in managed C#. (via Nintendo Wii Fanboy)

This means, for all you UK folks, you can now watch Top Gear, on demand, on your Wii. Awesome.
Hopefully the player for BBC Worldwide will show Top Gear as well.
One of the reasons I enjoy Tumblr so much is because when I want to surf the internet, the quality to crap ratio is so much higher when I start on Tumblr, as compared to just venturing off from somewhere totally random.
In a related note, does anyone really “surf” the internet anymore?
Randy Pausch: Living Life to the Fullest →
marco:
Great New York Times profile of Randy Pausch and his Last Lecture. You may have seen its link circulating a few months ago called “Dying 47-year-old professor’s last lecture”. I watched this a while ago, and I’m happy to see that Randy’s still alive. It’s great — you should really sit down and watch it sometime. (It’s a bit over an hour. Wait until you have the time it deserves.) Even...

Perhaps this is short-sighted and/or ignorant of me, but I find it amusing that what’s not okay for Microsoft (and lead to antitrust penalties) is okay for Apple.
