Because just one kind of backup just isn't...
Despite using rsync to automatically send all my pictures, music, and documents to my server nightly, I felt like that wasn’t enough. Thus, I just spent the last day burning all of the same files to 7 DVDs, to bring with me to work. The backups to the server do just fine for catastrophic hard drive failure. However, what happens if the house gets robbed, and both the server and laptop...
Note to self
Single Layer DVDs may have a claimed capacity of 4.7 gigabyes, but that’s base 10. They only have a capacity of 4.3 gigabytes base 2. Grrrrrrrrr.
Now I get the pleasure of waiting a couple hours to re-rar 11GB of music, splitting at 4.3 GB this time, instead of 4.7.

The feedback on my recent iPhone interface for Tumblr was that it was difficult to set up, so I’ve made it easier. You can now direct users to an iPhone-optimised version of your Tumblr site using a URL like this:
http://tumblephone.com/<username>/
The core of the resulting site is the same as for the self-hosted version, with none of the hassle. If you use it, let me know.

Little known Linkin Park fact
[Bennington] even suggested the band change its name to “Lincoln Park,” after a public park he regularly passed in Santa Monica. When the group discovered the domain name www.lincolnpark.com was already taken, they simply adjusted the spelling to “Linkin Park” instead.

Prof. Randy Pausch Passed Away :( →
His “Last Lecture” and “Time Management” videos were both really incredible. They’re worth spending two hours on (1hr each), if you haven’t seen them yet.
I hope when my time comes I have 1/10th the courage he did.

Interesting C# Note
As it turns out, if you have a situation like this:
using (IDisposable foo = new foo()) { throw new Exception(); }
foo.Dispose() will be called. This is because the call to Dispose() is actually implemented within a finally block when the code is compiled.

Supposedly (haven’t confirmed myself) this will update itself regularly during the day with iPhone 3G availability across the country. I’m sure someone out there is still looking for one, so hopefully this will help. (via Cult of Mac)

On the lack of a right mouse button
When I was debating taking the plunge and buying my first Mac, there were a few things that really turned me off, either because I was scared, or because I had a strong feeling I wouldn’t like the way I thought Macs worked. Having had the Mac for about a month now, I’m starting to reflect on the things that I had trepidations about before my purchase. Periodically, I plan to write a...
What's the diff? McCain attacks Obama with... →
Until recently, it was up for debate if John McCain knew about the Internet. However, it’s clear his camp does.
Apparently McCain’s camp has been using a web-based diff tool to track changes to Obama’s stances on various issues on Obama’s websiite. They’re then showing these differences to visitors of their site.
Pretty clever, actually.

iPhone OS 2.0 Unlocked →
For those who don’t live on geeky websites, some people were able to find seemingly final versions of the OS on Apple’s servers. It’s already been jailbroken. It isn’t even out yet. When will vendors realize there is (almost) no way to win?
As a geek, this makes me so terribly happy.
Although, apparently this isn’t terribly surprising given that all beta versions...
