What real life bad habits has programming given... →
marco: I temporize way too much in conversation. Things that anyone else would say as fact, I will still throw a “probably” or “perhaps” on, because I know there could always be that one edge case where a meteor strikes my neighborhood and I wouldn’t after all be able to make it out that day to Thanksgiving dinner. So true. I am the disclaimer king (“Well, that should be true,...

Fla. firefighter charged for taking severed foot →
Authorities said the St. Lucie County firefighter who took a man’s severed foot from an Interstate 95 crash scene last year has been charged with misdemeanor theft. […] Since there’s no law specifically dealing with the theft of a body part, he said it was difficult to determine the monetary value of the foot. What’s better is she apparently took it to train her dog. ...

Twitter is not public infrastructure →
Marco posts an interesting article on not relying on things that are beyond your control for your business. However, while it’s not an apples-to-apples comparison, couldn’t much of the same be said for writing iPhone applications? The app store can be down Apple has all the control Apple can change the rules anytime I presume that Marco is treating his time at Tumblr as his...

Another reason I love my Mac
A friend, whom I had previously added an Address Book entry for, sent his mailing address out via e-mail. When I hovered over the address he sent, the drop-down menu had an option for Add to Existing Contact. When I clicked that, instead of popping up Address Book and asking which contact to add the address to, Address Book automatically decided to add the address to the appropriate contact. ...

What the duck? Train your iPhone to (truly) learn... →
What did I uncover here today? Well, clearly, not every iPhone application can “learn” words. Notes seems to be brain-dead in that regard. At the same time, using Safari’s Google text entry field worked every time, expanding the database and [immediately] adding new items to my keyboard dictionary.

Steve Jobs taking a medical leave through June →
marco: While this will generate tons of rumors and cause a big stock drop, I have faith in Apple’s upper management that they could continue doing well without Steve Jobs. And that’s true whether he’s away for 6 months or forever. I’d actually be curious to see how the company did with someone else leading it. There’s risk, for sure. He has impeccably good taste and is enough of an asshole...

Cadillac CTS-V Performance Driving Lab →
Cadillac invited some drivers (owners?) to come drive the new CTS-V, that has basically the same engine as the epic ZR-1. Apparently they let most/all drivers do a hot lap in one, which they recorded, along with telemetry data. This is extremely cool. Make sure you pick a driver (any one) to watch.

On Inspiring Better UI Design →
I was impressed by the pressure that the polish of Mac OS put on us to pay attention to a few details that we might have otherwise ignored. I think Marco has been barking up this tree for a while. When you have a UI as consistent [-ly good] as OS X, cruddy UIs stand out like a sore thumb. This is in stark contrast to Windows, where even a good UI is at best inconsistent with all the other...

New Every [almost] Two →
You are eligible redeem your New Every Two benefit after fulfilling 20 months of your two year term. So most of the reason I was thinking of getting an iPhone was because my wife and I are up for “New Every Two” at the end of January. Unfortunately, our contract isn’t actually done until four months later. Thus, if we leave Verizon before May, we’ll be hit with a...
