GMail Push for iPhone is here! Sorta. →
This is a service that (apparently) uses IMAP IDLE to get notifications of new messages, and then proxies those notifications to a fake Exchange account. Your iPhone is set up to use this Exchange account, and thus get the push notification. This is clever, and I’d be totally into it, excepting that the iPhone only supports one exchange account at a time. That one account is my work...

dstrelau: The problem here is not that AT&T is unable to cope with the iPhone, but that there isn’t a US carrier who can. I honestly don’t believe that a Verizon iPhone would be any better, and they are the only other major player in the market. You just cannot put a next-generation handset on last-generation networks and expect it to work. Agreed. I think Verizon may be...

For all those that long for a Verizon iPhone, I wonder if they honestly believe a company with a history of neutering phones (such as killing WiFi in the Blackberry Storm, Bluetooth file transfer, etc) would leave the iPhone alone? Granted they’ll have pressure to keep up with AT&T’s (mostly) un-neutered version, but Verizon isn’t exactly known for openness.

Cellphone Gripes Worthy of Congress’s Time →
Why doesn’t it occur to [cell carriers] that they’d attract a heck of a lot more customers by making them happy instead of miserable? By being less greedy and obnoxious? By doing what every other industry does: try to please customers instead of entrap and bilk them? Great article from David Pogue about how ridiculous the US cellular industry is. (via /.)

That's Annoying.
When you use Markdown as your text entry means in Tumblr, if you use reference-style links where the URLs are defined after your prose, Tumblr won’t allow you to post an answerable question. This is presumably because the link definitions fall after the actual prose’s trailing question mark, which is understandable, but still frustrating.

iPhone Cases
Although I prefer to keep my iPhone naked, I don’t trust myself to keep it that way. I’d like a case that provides some modicum of protection without adding tons of thickness. I have heard good things about the InCase Slider, and am intrigued by the SwitchEasy Rebel and the thinness of the CaseMate Barely There. Does a thin case that will sufficiently protect the phone from impact...

An Unintentional Testament to the Simplicity of... →
To take a screenshot, you’ll be required to enable USB Debugging under the settings, install the Android software development kit, and then connect to the phone with a debug tool. To do the same thing on an iPhone, you hold the home and sleep/wake buttons for a moment.

It Must Be Nice to Be Verizon  →
Interesting article not as much in support of AT&T, but in contradiction to everyone (including me) saying “Verizon’s network is best”. I can only speak for myself, but living in a major metropolitan area in Virginia, I have not yet had any major issues with AT&T, and to my recollection no dropped calls in the month or so I’ve had the iPhone. Coverage certainly...

FreeAppAlert →
Neat website that updates daily to show the iPhone apps that just became free, but used to cost money. I spotted Coast Guard on there yesterday, which I like a lot in the 5 minutes I’ve had time to play it.

Obnoxiousness
For those with smartphones, do you use any sort of signature to indicate messages that come from your phone? ie, “Sent from my iPhone”? I changed mine to be “Sent while mobile” but I still feel like that may be bordering on conceited. What do you guys/gals do?

Do I Love My Wife? An Investigative Report →
When I told friends and family I was trying to scientifically assess my love for Julie, they all had the same response: “No good can come of this.” Really good article the missus sent me about one married guy looking into the science behind love. He compared his love for his wife to Angelina Jolie. All in the name of science, of course.
