So as a viral marketing schtick for @oldspice, the actor who plays “The Old Spice Guy”, @isaiahmustafa, has been replying to tweets, Facebook posts, and more, in-character. This one is my favorite of the few I’ve watched. Pure comedy gold, and marketing genius.

Public Service Announcement

Streaming Pandora for a work day, as well as doing some light Twittering and Facebooking every once in a while, uses approximately 200 MB of data.

My, how things have changed.

I’m not a parent, yet, but it has occurred to me lately that there are some things that I will understand intrinsically that children born today will not:

  • Why cameras make that cla-CLICK sound
  • Why the expenditure of money is colloquially described with “cha-CHING”
  • Why telephones sound like a bell, and perhaps even why you say the phone is “ringing”
  • Except in extreme cases, the noises a modem makes when it makes a connection (and for dorks, the distinction between a purely analog and digital connection)

I know the reasons behind these:

  • Shutters made/make those noises
  • Registers often made this noise, and the old-school credit swipers made a vaguely similar noise.
  • Mallets ringing bells used to be how phones notified people of incoming calls

Similarly, but less mind-melting:

  • Why/when cellular phones had external antennas

Perhaps this is just my way of acknowledging I’m getting older. Or that the passage of time does indeed always bring change. Either way, it’s staggering to think how far we’ve come in the closer-to-30-than-I-care-to-admit years I’ve been around.

What’s the next piece of every day life that I take for granted now that my children won’t understand?
