On Flexibility

My old employer (a Fortune 100 company) issued all their developers desktops. While I was there, I was lucky to come upon a HP laptop by being in the right place at the right time. However, to get it was a fiasco, and moreover, to get VPN access was a second fiasco. Furthermore, to add insult to injury, their only allowed/supported browser was Internet Explorer. 6.0. Wow.

My new employer (a small consulting company of around 200 people) issues virtually all its employees laptops. I cannot begin to describe how much I appreciate that. Furthermore, a VPN client was installed before they even handed it to me.

Tonight I’m going to do some work from home. Despite the fact that I’ve already worked 40 hours this week, and will probably work another 10-20 more, my morale is greatly increased by the fact that I can work from home tonight, instead of having to go back into the office.

Moral of the story: I don’t understand why all companies don’t issue laptops.
