Am I missing something?

There has been much made of the latest iPhone on Verizon rumors. But I still feel like something doesn’t make sense.

Granted, AT&T’s network sucks compared to Verizon’s, in terms of coverage. As someone who lives not in NYC nor California, I can tell you that AT&T’s network is 100% on par with Verizon’s when you stay on the beaten path. As soon as you’re more than a mile out of a metropolitan region or more than a mile off of an interstate, things get ugly fast on AT&T.

Nonetheless, Apple isn’t taking the blame for that. AT&T is. Repeatedly customer satisfaction surveys come out indicating the iPhone’s is through the roof. By and large you don’t see the press (including bloggers) say “the iPhone is a piece of garbage”. You see them say “AT&T’s network is a piece of garbage”.

So, if Apple isn’t really effected by AT&T’s pitiful network, then what I don’t get is, what’s Apple’s incentive? Yes, on the surface, it’s potentially millions of new sales. But does that really matter to Apple? The iPhone is, at quick count, available in nearly 100 countries. Does Verizon really matter that much? I’d imagine they’re a spit in the bucket compared to… the rest of the planet. What am I missing?

You’re missing nothing, you’re exactly right. There’s probably no business reason for Apple to offer
