During a brief call to Verizon FiOS customer service last night, I asked about the cost of increasing my data plan from my previous 15 mebibit symmetric service to something faster. I had indicated to the very nice CSR that I didn’t want to leave symmetric service behind—I had no interest in a 50/2 plan, for argument’s sake. As it turns out, I was able to increase to 25/15, and get a bunch of HD channels I was previously missing, for $7 less per month than I was previously paying. While it’s not symmetric, I think I’ll suffer through. I love FiOS.

In search of a wireless router that doesn't suck

A few ideas:

  • First off, as a Verizon FiOS user, I can tell you that they will provide you a router if/when you get service from them. If you already have service and weren’t forced to use an Actiontek router, then clearly service in NYC is not the same as service in Virginia. On a related note, I’ve been more pleased with the Actiontek router than my Linksys or Netgear routers.
    • Furthermore, I made this whilst running on WPA2 over 802.11g. That is effectively saturating my 15 megabit symmetric connection.
  • Secondly, the right answer is to use SmoothWall, as you mentioned. Scour Craigslist for a piece of garbage but operable old PC that you can get for the $40 you would have spent on a router. Don’t forget how weak the hardware can be whilst still being more than enough for SmoothWall. Also consider an old laptop with onboard ethernet, and then add a second ethernet adapter via USB or PCMCIA. That will cut down on fan noise and footprint. (In fact, I run Ubuntu Server on my old ThinkPad I had in school and it works great)

  • If you want a smaller/cleaner approach, get one of the routers that supports DD-WRT or Tomato. I’ve heard excellent things about both.
